    2. They meant that he plows his fields. That tends to be what farmers do. It's such a big deal because Christians are supposed to spend Sunday worshipping not working.

    3. Jacob is right. He meant to plow his crops. A couple sentences after that was said, John talked about farming his crops.

    2. She had never lied before and he had no other choice but to take a chance on her previously constant honesty. He had never seen her lie, which already enforced the belief that she would be honest. He also knew that she had been hurt by his affair with Abbigail and hoped that the pain might drive her even more to reveal that secret. The third point, strictly my personal opinion, may be that it was one of his few final chances and he was desperate for a way out, and when there is only one visible chance, you really have no choice but to put all of your confidence into it.

    3. She has never lied to him before and he highly believes that she will tell the truth in court even if that means she will ruin her husbands reputation.

  5. Now we know why Mary didn't want to testify against Abby, because she is now accusing Mary of witchcraft. Why are the other girls playing along?

    1. So the girls wont get in trouble for lying in court if the judge notices.

    2. I think its because of the fact that the other girls dont want to be accused of being a witch. So they are somewhat seeing what Abigail is doing and playing along.

    3. I think at first they just thought it was fun, and now they see what ABby has done to Mary when Mary tried to tell the truth, and they dont want that to happen to them.

    4. I think its because they dont want Mary to be accused of witch craft and be hung.

    5. I personally think that the girls are going along wiht Abigail because if just one of them were to tel the truth (like Mary), then Abigail would find a way to make their lives miserable and even get them put into prison. Abigail seems to be very persuasive and has other followers that would fake whatever she wanted them to. The threat of Abigail's hatred is enough to scare the girls into staying quiet.

  17. Why does Abby talk about seeing a yellow bird (p.114) and what does that have to do with Mary?
    -Erica Westerman

    1. I think Abby talks about seeing the yellow bird (Mary's spirit) so they think Mary is a witch, and is lying about Abby being behind the need in her own stomach.
      -Allison Sterk

    2. She is pretending that Mary changed her form into a bird and is going to "tear her face". This will turn the suspicion from Abigail to Mary for using witchcraft.

    2. She claimed he blackmailed and threatened her into testiying against Abbigail so Abbigail and her friends would not blame or accuse Mary, and to make herslef seem not only innocent but afflicted and victimized. Essentially, she joined their side and betrayed Proctor in order to protect herself.

    1. They are probably trying to get rid of the people they don't like. A example is that Abigail wants to get rid of Elizabeth because she still has feelings for Proctor. And Abigail doesn't want Elizabeth to be with him.

  32. Why did none of the other girls decided to fess up once Mary stepped forward and said that she had just faked the witchcraft? This would have been a great time for everyone to turn away from abby and to come clean. This would have saveed many lives in the town.

  33. Does Danforth have any underlying relationship with Proctor that caused him not to trust him?
    -Zach Lattea

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Zach, I don not believe there were any previous emotions between Danforth and Proctor. I believe the distrust was caused by the fact that Danforth was first approached by a seemingly honest Judge and reverend. I also believe that the fact that the only people up until this point who openly argued that Abbigail and her friends were lying were all accused previously, therefore seeking any way to escape prison or hanging. Not only that but Proctor's wife is also already imprisoned, which may lead Proctor to lie about Abbigail and try his best to undermine what she claims for truth. These things partnered with the revealed lack of Church visits, plowing on the sacred day, and adultery with Abbigail may have all sort of piled up to initially cause Danforth's view of Proctor to be overwhelmingly negative.

  34. Why would the court believe Abbigail WIlliams when she was caught lying about witchcraft and she was making things up that sound so rediculous, such as Mary Warren sending her spirit out and changing her soul to the form of a bird.

  35. What will happen now to Mary after she began to tell the truth in court, but after Abigail started to turn the girls agaisnt her, she began to lie again to everyone?

What will happen to Elizabeth now since he lied to the court to save her husbands name? Will she confess that she did "see the devil" or will she stay by the truth and see what punishment or no punishment will get her?

What will happen to John and Elizabeth after this is all over and they get out of the mess? What will happen to them if they are not able to?
